TRADING FAVORS

When detective Genevieve Orion came back to town, the last place she expected to find herself was on her ex’s doorstep. After eight months, the only thing she wants from Joel Maddox is information. But every deal with the devil comes with a price.

Joel has no intention of letting Gen walk back out of his life a second time. With his werewolf heritage as his only ace in the hole to get the information she’s looking for, Joel’s not above striking a little bargain. One that will give them both exactly what they need. Each other.

EXCERPT

The gleam in Joel’s green eyes set off alarm bells in her head.  Casually, she eased away from him, positioning the island between them.

The corner of his mouth twitched. He was clearly amused by her attempt to keep herself out of arms reach.

“How about this …?” He stepped to the right, his steps calculated.  Every move declared him a hunter maneuvering into position to strike.

Gen didn’t back down, refusing to show the fear or uncertainty that sent her pulse racing.  He would move in, and move in fast if he suspected how much she wanted to run.  The wolf in him wouldn’t have it any other way.

As he edged purposefully towards her with the stalk of a seasoned predator, she gripped the island and didn’t break from the magnetic gaze that had worked under her skin from the first moment she’d laid eyes on him.  She didn’t want that reminder in her head, not when she was fumbling and failing to cling to the commonsense that told her to get out of there while she still could.

Joel stepped up behind her and planted a hand on the counter on each side of her, caging her in.  “How about we make a deal?  I’ll tell you where you might be able to find Conroy, and you admit how much you still want me.”

Even the slightest wiggle for room brought her tighter against his hard chest, and the thick ridge of his erection that rubbed her bottom.

Genevieve sucked in a breath.  He was too close.  She couldn’t concentrate when he was right there.  She shut her eyes and contemplated—for just a second—leaning against him the way she had done countless times.  Her neck tingled, thinking about how he used to brush her hair away and slide his mouth down the sensitive curve until he nipped her with his teeth and made her moan.

But she couldn’t give in.  Wouldn’t.  Certainly not now.  Once upon a time she had truly believed they stood a chance.  Knowing what he was hadn’t changed the way she felt about him.  If anything when he finally told her the truth, that he could take the form of a wolf, she fell harder for him.  Joel might want her, and judging by the heat simmering between her thighs, she still wanted him, but that didn’t mean it would be a wise move to let things go any farther.

Funny how she couldn’t seem to get that point across to any part of her below the neck.

“I’m waiting,” Joel murmured against her ear.

She knew there was no use in denying she was turned on by him.  Without a doubt his heightened senses would make a liar out of her if she tried.  She still had no plans to give in.

Gen shook her head.  “No deal.”  If she gave in now, there wouldn’t be any going back.  There was no reason to think Joel wanted anything more than sex from her right now.  And he was willing to use her need for information to get it.  As foolishly hot as the prospect of sex with Joel made her with his warm chest burning into her back, his arousal thick and hard against her behind, it wasn’t good enough.

Joel didn’t move.  “Gen,” he whispered.  “Come on.  You were never one to walk away from a game.”

“Is that what this is?”

“Yeah.”  He brushed his lips across her collarbone, and she couldn’t hold back a shudder.  “You play by the rules and I help you out.”

She swallowed, the air getting thinner with each breath she tried to pull into her lungs.  “And exactly what are the rules?”  She didn’t know why she even asked.  There wasn’t a hope in hell she could beat him at any game that involved his hands on her.

“We’ll make it nice and simple,” his mouth hovered at the corner of her jaw.  “You just have to admit you still want me.”
